Thanks for taking the time to check out my site!
A California native, I grew up in Auburn and attended Sacramento State University on a full scholarship for volleyball. I decided to pursue a B.S. degree in Graphic Design and loaded up my class schedule accordingly. Our volleyball program competed nationally at a Division 1 level, which meant that our practice, travel, and competition schedule was quite strenuous. With such demands on my time, it was crucial that I remain disciplined and focused.
Just 2 months after the start of my freshman year, doctors discovered a large brain aneurysm at the base of my skull. After an experimental procedure to fix the aneurysm and months of rehab, I returned to school to get my degree. I worked very hard in the classroom and on the volleyball court and my determination paid off. As a sophomore I was named to the conference All-Academic team, while the next two years I was selected to the all-Big Sky conference team.
Months before graduation, I was hospitalized for a ruptured ovarian cyst. After complications from surgery, doctors had to remove a section of my large & small intestine, which continues to wear on my body to this day. Determined to get some sense of normalcy back, I continued to workout & began building my clientele, learning all I could from the real world of design.
Although mine was not a traditional college experience, I consider myself very fortunate to have gone through what I did. It made me a stronger, healthier, and more grateful person. The demands on my time, my body, and my spirit taught me to persevere through adversity, to be disciplined even when all around me is chaos, and to believe in the power within me. I graduated with a 3.6 G.P.A. and left the school ranked second in career digs and fifth in kills and was proud to be considered one the school’s all-time best players to ever graduate.
After graduation, with all that I had faced, I was unsure if my body could withstand the demands of being a full time athlete again. I was playing beach volleyball for fun, toying with the idea of trying to make it on the AVP. As has been a consistent throughout my athletic and design career, my determination and work ethic led me to success. I was passionate about my work, set attainable goals, and eventually made it on to the AVP pro beach volleyball tour where I have been a consistent top-20 performer for the last seven years, & top 10 in the last three.
Throughout my career on the AVP, I continued to succeed as a graphic designer. I worked for design firms, magazines, and marketing companies, and started my own design business right after college building logos, branding, and product design. Since then my experience has multiplied & my business is more successful. I expanded to designing & coding websites for a variety of corporate and individual clients a few years ago & continue to love all aspect of the creative process, working on projects for all mediums. Similar to college, the demands on my time are immense, yet I continued to stay focused, managed my time well, and work through the many obstacles I face, all while delivering consistently strong designs for my clients.
I have recently retired from the AVP. So for the first time in a long time, I’ve got a clean bill of health, a little extra time on my hands, and a wealth of experience.
